Palau de les Arts Valencia 2026/27: Ricarda Merbeth as Ortrud
In December 2026, Ricarda Merbeth returns to Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia as Ortrud in Richard Wagner’s Lohengrin.
One of Wagner’s most fascinating female roles, Ortrud stands at the centre of the opera’s darker world: politically calculating, wounded, proud and driven by a fierce resistance to the new order represented by Lohengrin. For Ricarda Merbeth, who has long been acclaimed in Wagner repertoire, the role marks another important appearance in one of the composer’s key works.
The new production is staged by Damiano Michieletto, with sets by Paolo Fantin, costumes by Carla Teti and lighting by Alessandro Carletti. Sir Mark Elder conducts the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana and the Cor de la Generalitat Valenciana.
Ricarda Merbeth appears alongside David Butt Philip as Lohengrin, Jennifer Davis as Elsa von Brabant, Wolfgang Koch as Friedrich von Telramund, Anthony Robin Schneider as Heinrich and Kostas Smoriginas as the Herald.
The production is a new staging for Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, in co-production with the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and Teatro La Fenice in Venice.
