Maggio Musicale Fiorentino has announced its 2027 festival season, including a new production of Richard Strauss’ Elektra with Ricarda Merbeth in the title role.

The third opera production of the festival and the second conducted by Daniele Gatti will present Strauss’ landmark work of the 20th century in a staging by director and set designer Stéphane Braunschweig. The production brings together an outstanding Strauss ensemble, also including Violeta Urmana as Klytämnestra, Vida Miknevičiūtė as Chrysothemis, Nikolai Schukoff as Ägisth and Christof Fischesser as Orest.

The premiere will take place on 20 June 2027 at Teatro del Maggio – Sala Grande, followed by performances on 23, 26 and 28 June.

The production at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino will be Ricarda Merbeth’s second Elektra production of the 2026/27 season, following her return to the role at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Since her role debut in 2018 at Teatro alla Scala, Elektra has become one of the central works in Ricarda Merbeth’s repertoire.
